Melana Select Bulkhead

Q: I have fitted your Microwave Sensor bulkhead (item 6393) in my bathroom but the colour isn't the one I wanted can you tell me how to change the colour of it, please?

A: Unfortunately you will have to remove the fitting from the ceiling as the controls are on the back, there are two screws on the side of the fitting simply loosen these whilst holding the fitting and the fitting will come away from the fixing bracket, on the back there is a white rubber bung and under that there is the switch to choose your required colour also labelled there, 3000K which is a warm white colour similar to a traditional incandescent, 4000k which is a cool white so white in appearance and then 5000K which is more of a blue white light. Simply slide the switch to your required colour re-instate the bung and screw up the same as you took down. Please note however we don't recommend doing this yourself as there are potentially live cables, we recommend you consult a qualified electrician.

Q: When I bought this the sales person was going on about it being IP54, I have no idea what he was on about so just nodded and said ok. Can you explain what he was on about and what the purpose of IP54 is, please?

A: The IP rating stands for Ingress Protection and it is used to define levels of sealing effectiveness of electrical enclosures against intrusion from foreign bodies (tools, dirt etc) and moisture. The ratings are split into two numbers the first standing for "Solid objects" and the second for "Moisture". So for the above fitting 5 stands for "Dust protected. Limited ingress of dust permitted. Will not interfere with the operation of the equipment", and the 4 stands for "Protected against water splashes from all directions. Limited ingress permitted". Levels go from IP11 up to IP68, so the higher the number the better protection it offers.

Q: I am a caretaker in a residential care home and I would like to fit your microwave sensor fittings and your emergency fittings to our communal corridor and stairway areas. Some of our corridor ceilings are quite high. Can you tell me what range they work at please, also my electrician tells me the emergency ones have to run for a certain time period can you tell me what yours do please?

A: The microwave sensor range is 5m – 7m and the emergency runs for a minimum of 3hrs as defined in the standards and will run a 20% light output in emergency mode.

Q: Can you tell me what areas of the bathroom this is able to be fitted, please?

A: The fitting is IP54 rated so suitable for zonal areas 1, 2 and outside zones in a bathroom.
